Summer 2017 deVeber News

Find out what's been happening at the deVeber Institute this summer!

Our summer interns finish with flurry!
This summer the Institute had the privilege of hiring three outstanding summer interns: Jade Meawasige, Kathryn Pfaff, and Tiffany Tran. These three students assisted the Institute with research, office administration, outreach and event planning. The summer interns completed their time with the Institute with our annual summer symposium on July 28th.  One summer intern commented:
"With the deVeber Institute this summer I learned the importance of critical research through the updating of Complications with Dr Gentles, and I was able to align my studies in university with the Institute through the process of creating a prenatal testing resource for expecting mothers."

Thank you summer students for your hard work and all the best with your studies this academic year!

Symposium Success

Our third annual summer symposium hosted in collaboration with Wycliffe College was a great success. Our five expert speakers offered participants thorough and thought provoking presentations on all aspects of Canada's Medical Assistance in Dying law has had over the past year. One participant, a medical student told us, “Its symposiums such as these that allow healthcare practitioners and trainees to engage in conversations that are non-existent in day-to-day practice.”  Look for a more complete update in the next issue of the Perspectives newsletter!

Updated e-edition of Complications available soon

This summer our summer students worked with deVeber board member and researcher Ian Gentles on chapter updates to the Institute's publication of Complications: Abortion's Impact on Women. This revised edition will be available for online ordering this fall.
All the best to our Executive Director, Kathy Matusiak!

Please join the deVeber Institute in wishing our Executive Director, Kathy Matusiak and her husband Cesar all the best as they prepare to welcome their first child this September. Kathy will be leaving the Institute for a one year maternity leave. In her absence Elaine Drake will be joining the Institute in Kathy's role for the year. We want to thank Kathy for her outstanding work over the past seven years she has been with the Institute and we give a warm welcome to Elaine Drake. We look forward to sharing the joyful news of the arrival of baby Matusiak-Costa in our upcoming fall newsletter!
